Why did JK Rowling make Dementors?
J. K. Rowling has revealed that the inspiration for Dementors came from her bout with severe depression before her phenomenal success. She described the feeling as an "absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful again. The absence of hope.
Many have theorized that Dementors were a symbol for depression, and Rowling confirmed this. "That is exactly what they are," she said in a 2000 interview. "It was entirely conscious.
In Harry Potter, Dementors first appear in The Prisoner of Azkaban and are described as dark, foul beings who “drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them.” Rowling writes, “Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you.”
J.K. Rowling suffered serious depression in the years before Harry Potter, and has said that the dementors are supposed to be a physical incarnation of that. Also, note that the treatment for a dementor's kiss was the same as J.K. Rowling's go-to comfort food: chocolate.
Professor Lupin explains that Harry has more dark moments in his past than most people, so there is more pain for the dementors to drudge up.

Albus Dumbledore was one who had long disapproved of the use of Dementors as guards, not only because of the inhumane treatment of the prisoners in their power, but because he foresaw the possible shift in loyalties of such Dark creatures.
Ekrizdis is a minor yet pivotal antagonist in the Harry Potter universe. He was an immensely evil wizard who lived in the 15th century in medieval Britain, it is believed he was either the creator of the Dementors or that his insane experiments and torture caused the Dementors to first manifest.
Luna's backstory does seem to hearken Harry's, as she also tragically lost her mother in an accident when she was nine — and it becomes apparent that she actually witnessed the tragic event when she can see Thestrals.
Who set the Dementors after Harry?
After rumours of Lord Voldemort's return and the increased paranoia of Cornelius Fudge, Umbridge set two dementors on Harry Potter and his cousin Dudley Dursley in Little Whinging in an attempt to get him expelled from Hogwarts for use of magic outside of school.
Reproduction. Dementors breed by surrounding themselves with large amounts of a special fog which they exude. New individuals, already fully formed, will gradually congregate from the mist.
The Dementors feed off of despair. Voldemort's army spreads it, allowing the dementors to breed. The Dementors take care of the Death Eaters enemies, taking their souls, and demoralizing the rest of the population. It's mutually beneficial to both of them.
Harry Potter was particularly affected by the Dementors due to the murder of his parents, to which his teacher, Professor Lupin, assured him was "nothing to do with weakness", and that "the Dementors affect you worse than the others because there are horrors in your past that the others don't have."
The Dementors made his inner feelings of hurt and abandonment come to life, along with bringing back his worst memories. As mentioned by Remus Lupin, Harry's true fear was fear itself, which the Dementors projected. The creatures forced him to feel the defeated mentality inside of him that he generally pushed down.
As the Dementor hovered over Dudley, he finally viewed himself for who he truly was: a spoiled bully. Dudley realized how cruel he was, and how horribly he treated others, including his own cousin. Upon addressing his past behavior, the Dementor attack gave Dudley a chance to take a step back to reevaluate his life.
Professor Snape : I could do it, you know. But why deny the Dementors? They're so longing to see you... do I detect a flicker of fear? Ah, yes, the Dementor's Kiss.
Every time Harry is confronted with a Dementor, he hears the screams of his mother as she is murdered by Lord Voldemort. A horrific memory to hear... He hears this moment because Dementors feed upon happiness and cause depression and despair in anyone near them.
It states that the dementors can sense the presence of a horcurux in Harry, which technically is another piece of soul. So they sense two or to be precise 1.014(1+1/7) souls in Harry which draws their attention. But the true reason is that Harry had a traumatic past.
Dementors feed on human happiness and thus generate feelings of depression and despair in any person in close proximity to them. They can also consume a person's soul, leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state, and thus are often referred to as "soul-sucking fiends", rendering a person an 'empty-shell'.
Are Dementors worse than death?
The Dementor's Kiss was generally considered to be a punishment worse than death. Victims were left in what Muggles would call a 'Persistent Vegetative State': empty shells that were still alive but irretrievably 'gone'.
One of the most powerful defensive charms known to wizardkind, the Patronus can also be used as a messenger between wizards. As a pure, protective magical concentration of happiness and hope (the recollection of a single talisman memory is essential in its creation) it is the only spell effective against Dementors.
But just when he thought he had found his tribe, he lost it all, betrayed by one of his own. Sirius's intense love for James, his grief after James's death, and his anger towards Peter drove him to insanity, getting him locked up in Azkaban for crimes he never committed.
He fears them more because he has to relive the memory of his parents' deaths each time he encounters them. We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
The Dementor is simply unable to perform the kiss on a wizard who has a Horcrux. Voldemort is unaffected and has a good laugh at the silly Dementor.
Dementors aren't technically alive, like Boggarts or Poltergeists. JKR said, "You cannot destroy Dementors, though you can limit their numbers if you eradicate the conditions in which they multiply, ie, despair and degradation."
In effect, Dementors can turn people into Dementors by stealing their souls. The theory even notes that Ekrizdis' overwhelming dark magic and sadistic actions in his era might have resulted in the creation of the early Dementors, the remnants of his victims twisted by his magics.
It is implied that Dementors are one of byproducts of Dark magic experiments conducted by Ekrizdis at his fortress on the island. After his death, the various concealment charms placed on the island faded, and the Ministry became aware of the mysterious site's existence.
Professor Remus Lupin's lycanthropy is an apt metaphor for bipolar disorder.

Although Muggles could not see Dementors, they were affected in a way similar to wizards and witches, becoming depressed when near them.
It is clarified that they have genders and reproduce asexually. The Dementors refer to themselves as Mind People, due to their telepathic ability, which goes farther than the ability to suck out happy memories and allows them to communicate with humans or with each other without speaking, which they are unable to do.
They're also considered amortal instead of immortal. They don't live forever, but cannot be killed by typical means. The number of Dementors dwindle when there is more happiness in their environment. While they might not really die, they do disappear.
Ampulex dementor is a species of cockroach wasp native to Thailand, described in 2014 by Michael Ohl of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, Germany.

In Prisoner of Azkaban, why did the Ministry send dementors to guard Hogwarts instead of aurors? The reason Rowling needed dementors at Hogwarts was so Harry would have an in-universe excuse to have to learn the patronus charm.
A theory posted on Reddit suggests Dementors were drawn to Harry because they could sense the piece of Voldemort's soul living in him. Harry is an “accidental horcrux”, created when the killing curse casted by Voldemort backfired, fragmented his soul, and sent a piece of it to Harry's body.
How was Sirius not affected by Dementors?
Harry's godfather Sirius Black endured 12 years in solitary confinement in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. By focusing on his innocence he was able to survive and escape the merciless Dementors, and would later narrowly avoid the Dementors' Kiss with help from his godson.
Without thinking, Harry casts a Patronus in their direction, and he catches the Snitch easily, winning the game. Only afterwards does he discover that the Dementors were, in fact, several Slytherins, including Malfoy, dressed in cloaks with the intention of unseating Harry.
The first and main use of the Patronus was to drive off certain dark creatures, such as Dementors and Lethifolds, and was the only known charm that would work against them.
In Harry Potter, Riddikulus is a spell used against Boggarts. For the magic to work, you have to think of something funny while casting it. If it works, it makes the boggart take the shape of whatever you were thinking of and because Boggarts feed on fear, they're defeated by laughter.
He teaches Harry to recognise the Dementors for what they are - greedy, soulless, evil creatures - while also giving him the confidence and knowledge to fight back, by harnessing his happiest memories, another piece of advice I'll be following from now on.

How are Dudley and Draco different? Dudley didn't attempt or support murder. He didn't try to tortue people — yes, he did bully and even beat them but he never physically tortured them. Dudley didn't join terrorist groups but Draco did.
The aftermath of this saw Dudley change to an extent; he became less belligerent and even civil to Harry. The Dementor attack was the catalyst for a change in Dudley's personality that started in Order of the Phoenix, and we saw the end result in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Dementors are born when there is so much pain and suffer in the air that it can materialise it's self. That means that most Dementors were created during the First and Second wizarding war or in the time of Grinwald's attacks in Europe. That's why Dementors can only be destroyed by the Patronum summoning charm.
IT WASN'T ORIGINALLY A PRISON
Well, that's because originally, Azkaban was a fortress built by the sorcerer Ekrizdis, who himself was a powerful and insane practitioner of the Dark Arts. Ekrizdis actually lured, tortured, and killed Muggle sailors there up until he died and the concealment charms faded.
Chocolate as a remedy
J.K. Rowling told us, 'the mood-enhancing properties of chocolate are well known in both the Muggle and wizard worlds. Chocolate is the perfect antidote for anyone who has been overcome in the presence of Dementors, which suck hope and happiness out of their surroundings.
